After teaching at Chicago Business School he worked for the International Monetary Fund from 1983 to 1997 before moving on to the financial sector. He joined Deutsche Bank's London office in October 1997. He was a member of the Markets division executive committee headed by Anshu Jain, and later the investment bank executive committee. In 2012, he became a member of the Deutsche Bank Group Executive Committee, which was co-chaired by Anshu Jain and Jürgen Fitschen. At the same time, he also succeeded Thomas Mayer as Deutsche Bank's chief economist.He has kept a low public profile as chief economist and is better known as a "confidante" to Anshu Jain.Folkerts-Landau's personal wealth is estimated to be EUR 350 million ($400 million) which makes him one of the richest bankers in Europe.".
