From 1996 to 1997, he was a chairman of the mathematics department and from 1997 to 2004 he was the head of School of Physical Sciences and Engineering.From 1988 to 1989 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and in 1993 was at the IHÉS. In 1994, he was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich (Smooth representations of p-adic groups: the role of compact open subgroups).His field is the representation theory, more specifically the representation theory of reductive p-adic groups and the local Langlands correspondence; his textbook on the latter is well-regarded.In 1995 he was awarded the Senior Whitehead Prize. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.Among his doctoral students was Graham Everest.".
