- Q16256398 abstract "The Canatuan mine is a controversial copper-zinc open-pit mine in the province of Zamboanga del Norte on the southern island of Mindanao, Philippines. It has been exploited by the Calgary-based mining company TVI (Toronto Ventures Incorporated) Pacific Inc., for 18 years. All that time, it was the source of a huge and long-standing controversy because of environmental and human rights issues. Despite a provincial ban on open-pit mining in 2011 [1] and despite international pressure [2], TVI Pacific exploited the Canatuan mine until January 2014 [3]The accusations of human rights and environmental organisations like Canada's mining watchdog MiningWatch Canada were many: negative health impacts on indigenous population/Lumad peoples, massive loss of jobs, environmental destruction and intimidation of and violence against the indigenous population/Lumad peoples by paramilitary forces. TVI was also accused of the destruction of Mount Canatuan which has been, since time immemorial, the sacred mountain of the Subanon people, of greenwashing and finally of the illegal manipulation of the Free, prior and informed consent from the legitimate Subanön leaders, needed to take possession of their ancestral lands.Local groups and national and international organisations asked the Canadian government in vain to investigate the activities of the Philippine operating affiliate of TVI Pacific, TVI Resource Development (TVIRD), and stop the irreparable harm done to the Subanon people.TVIRD is 40% owned by TVI, with the remaining 60% ownership held by a number of Philippine residents and companies. It is alo involved in other controversial mining operations in Mindanao: the MRL Agata Nickel mining project in Jabonga, Agusan del Norte province [4] and the Balabag mining project in Bayog in Zamboanga del Sur province.
