He received his secondary education at the LDS Church–owned Academia Juárez in Colonia Juarez. As a young man, Valenzuela served as a full-time church missionary in the Mexico Veracruz Mission. After his mission, he moved to Mexico City, where he met Silvia Pilar De Porras.They married in the Mesa Arizona Temple in 1982.Valenzuela holds a bachelor's degree from Mexico City's University of Accounting and Administration Studies. He spent his career working as an executive for several different multi-national corporations. In the LDS Church, he been a bishop, a counselor in a stake presidency, a counselor in presidency of the Mexico Chihuahua Mission, and an area seventy. He became a general authority and a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy in April 2013. Since August 2013, he has served as a counselor in the presidency of the church's Mexico Area.".
