- Q15820556 abstract "J. Carlos Santamarina is an Argentinian Professor of Civil Engineering (Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He is affiliated with the Earth Science and Engineering Program of the Physical Science and Engineering Division.Santamarina was born in Cordoba, Argentina, studied civil engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba (degree in Civil Engineering, 1982), the University of Maryland (master's degree in 1984) and Purdue University, where he received his doctorate in 1987.He was a member of the faculty at NYU Polytechnic University NYU Polytechnic University (1987-1991), University of Waterloo University of Waterloo (1992-1995), and Georgia Tech Georgia Tech (1996-2015) before he joined KAUST in March 2015.His research deals with the scientific foundations of geomaterial behavior and subsurface processes using particle-level and pore-scale experiments, combined with numerical methods and high-resolution process monitoring systems. This conceptual and experimental framework is used to advance the study of phenomena and the development of solutions in energy geotechnology with contributions to: resource recovery (petroleum, methane hydrates), energy geo-storage, efficiency and conservation, and the geological storage of energy waste (carbon geological storage, fly ash and nuclear waste). He is now acting as a principal investigator in Energy Geo-Engineering Laboratory (EGEL) under The KAUST's Upstream Petroleum Engineering Research Center (UPERC) in which he is also an associate director to assist Dr. Tadeusz Patzek.Santamarina has maintained two research hobbies, one on engineering creativity (TED talk) and the other on biomediated/bio-inspired geoengineering.".
