He is a co-founder, with Robert Hull of the Miller/Hull Partnership—a Pacific Northwest firm, an architecture professor at the University of Washington, and, since January 2007, has been Chair of the UW Department of Architecture. Miller was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He received a Bachelor of Architecture B.Arch. from Washington State University in 1968, the worked in Brasilia as a Peace Corps volunteer. He next studied at the University of Illinois and received his Master of Architecture M.Arch. in 1972. After graduation, Miller worked for Canadian architect Arthur Erickson. He moved to Seattle in 1977 to open a branch office of Rhone & Iredale. In 1980, Miller and Robert Hull took the office independent and renamed it the Miller/Hull Partnership.In 1990 Miller joined the faculty of the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington as an associate professor; he was promoted to full professor in 1998.Miller spoke at the Spotlight on Design Lecture Series held at the National Building Museum in 2003. In December 2014, Miller announced he would step down as chair of the Department of Architecture in summer 2015. The College of Built Environments has initiated a search for a new department chair.".
