According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, Fan Shamali had a population of 1,877 in the 2004 census. Its inhabitants are predominantly Sunni Muslims, although most of the surrounding villages and hamlets are inhabited by Alawites.Fan Shamali contains the ruins of a Byzantine tower dating back to 576 CE.In early September 2012, during the Syrian civil war, opposition activists reported that a "massacre" occurred in Fan al-Shamali committed by local members of the Shabiha, a pro-government militia. According to activists, at least 30 residents were killed, including women and children.".
