- Q1172333 abstract "Data synchronization is the process of establishing consistency among data from a source to a target data storage and vice versa and the continuous harmonization of the data over time. It is fundamental to a wide variety of applications, including file synchronization and mobile device synchronization e.g., for PDAs.My general response to this subject — [NB.—This is more a comment than a direct edit.] I feel the coverage of this term neglects the clarification of a usage which has become ubiquitous in this age of computing. 'Synchronization,' in recent history, was not a term with very general significance to most speakers. With the advent of widespread network computing, the term was used more frequently, but the emphasis was on data fidelity, perfect copies made by network professionals. Currently the term is much more generally used (mostly as 'synch' or 'sync' or 'syncing' in the lingo) to refer to operations which can often be defined by the inexpert users, to bring the data on two devices in to some sort of relationship. The sameness suggested by the term 'synchronization' may be very misleading, as the goal of the syncing operations is frequently not to leave the two sources identical, and the method for harmonizing the two may even include the deletion of data on one of the sources. Worse, the operation is often introduced without any description of what the syncing algorithm does. I'm not sufficiently expert in this field to write this edit. But I do feel this is an important part of the current meaning of this word. I would be happy to help with writing the edit if an expert were available to advise on the content. Long live Wiki!!".
