- Victorian_Secular_Lobby abstract "The Victorian Secular Lobby is an organisation dedicated to Secularism, based in the state of Victoria, Australia. It was founded on July 2010 and initiated a campaign with some twenty religious celebrants to back marriage equality, a rising issue in the upcoming Australian federal election. Since then the Lobby became an incorporated association in 2011 and endorsed a wide range of policies at its 2014 Annual General Meeting. Meetings of the association typically have an outside speaker and result in lobbying activities. Past speakers include Stephen Stuart (2012), President, Humanist Society of Victoria, on Special Religious Instruction in state schools, Jamie Gardiner (2012) of Liberty Victoria on Federal equal opportunity legislation, Dr. Rodney Syme, from Dying With Dignity Victoria (2013), Colleen Hartland (2014) on the possibility of abortion law reform, Fiona Patten (2015) on religious exemptions to equal opportunity legislation, and Maree Edwards (2016), on the politics of the Bendigo Mosque. The Association has also presented papers and submission to other organisations and conferences. This includes the Melbourne Atheist Society (2012), the 4D National Conference at the University of West Sydney in (2014), the Humanist Society of Victoria (2014), and the University of Melbourne Secular Society (2015). The Association gave a submission to the Legal and Social Issues Committee of the Victorian Parliament Concerning End of Life Choices (2015).The Association joined the Secular Coalition of Australia in 2014. For the the 2014 Victorian State election compared the voting record of sitting members against relevant matters and, following that assessment, ran a campaign against MPs which had demonstrated an anti-secular approach with a targetted campaign in their electorates. All sitting candidates so targetted experienced swings against them. The Committee of management is democratically elected each year in advance of the Annual General Meeting. The positions are President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, as well as ordinary committee members. Current committee members are listed on the Association's website. The Victorian Secular Lobby provides a regular newsfeed of relevance to Victorian secular issues, mainly sourced from the Proxima Thule Press Extracts service, conducted by committee member Nigel Sinnott, former editor of The Freethinker.".
