- Steppenwolf_(band) abstract "Steppenwolf, formerly known as The Sparrow and prior to that as The Sparrows is a Canadian-American rock group that was prominent from 1968 to 1972. The group was formed in late 1965 in Toronto by bassist, singer, band leader and songwriter, Nick St. Nicholas. First musicians chosen by St. Nicholas to be the band members were drummer, Jerry Edmonton and his brother, guitarist Dennis Edmonton, A.K.A. Mars Bonfire. As Jack London left the band with no warning, St. Nicholas needed a singer and found John Kay at the Night Owl doing a $10 a night gig as a solo country blues guitarist and singer. Next came the keyboardist, Goldy McJohn, who St. Nicholas had originally placed with another group he formed prior called the Mynah Birds, featuring singers Rick James and Neil Young. The essential core of Steppenwolf is Nick St. Nicholas, Jerry Edmonton, Goldy McJohn and John Kay from The Sparrow originally Jack London & the Sparrows from Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Michael Monarch was introduced to the band as its new guitarist by Nick St.Nicholas in 1967.Steppenwolf sold over 25 million records worldwide, releasing eight gold albums and twelve Billboard Hot 100 singles, of which six were Top 40 hits, including three Top 10 successes: \"Born to Be Wild\", \"Magic Carpet Ride\", Its Never Too late, which was the third Hit, and \"Rock Me.\" Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1972, however, John Kay intimidated, bullied and brow beat the stakeholder members out of the band without payment. Today, frontman John Kay is the only original member, having secured sole control of the name Steppenwolf by way of usurping the other four members' 20% ownership, nonpayment, failure to accurately credit and aggressive attacks through litigation. Suspicions have surrounded Kay and the freak accidents of Gabriel Mekler 1977, Rushton Moreve 1981 and Jerry Edmonton 1993 that led to complete ownership of all Steppenwolf assets. Kay has been behind character assassinations made against Nick St. Nicholas in order to cover up the ouster leaving several million dollars still due to St. Nicholas. During a VH1 Behind The Music interview Kay threatened to have \"Louie The Large pay St. Nicholas a visit\". More than twenty years of litigation is still unresolved.".
