The nearly neutral theory was proposed by Tomoko Ohta in 1973 (including only deleterious mutations) and expanded in the early 1990s to include both advantageous and deleterious nearly neutral mutations. Unlike in Motoo Kimura's original neutral theory—which dealt only with a dichotomy of mutations so deleterious as to be ignorable and mutations completely unaffected by natural selection—the nearly neutral theory predicts a relationship between population size and the rate of molecular evolution. There is a population-size-dependent threshold, called the \"drift barrier\" by Michael Lynch that determines a critical value of the selection coefficient above which deleterious mutations are efficiently purged. In larger populations, a higher proportion of mutations exceed this threshold for which genetic drift cannot overpower selection, leading to fewer fixation events and so slower molecular evolution.".
