She attended the University of Toronto medical school and graduated at the top of her class. She went on to practise as a family physician in Toronto for 20 years. Then, in 1977, she joined the Health Sciences faculty at McMaster University. She was associate dean of Health Services from 1991 to 1996.At McMaster, she established the Women's Health Office.
