- London_Underground abstract "The London Underground (or simply the Underground or the Tube) is a public rapid transit system serving a large part of Greater London and parts of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex. The network is considered the oldest rapid transit system, incorporating the world's first underground railway, the Metropolitan Railway, which opened in 1863 and is now part of the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines; and the first line to operate underground electric traction trains, the City & South London Railway in 1890, now part of the Northern line. The network has expanded to 11 lines, and in 2014/15 carried 1.305 billion passengers, making the Underground the world's 11th busiest metro system. The system's first tunnels were built just below the surface, using the cut and cover method, and are large enough to take trains of normal size. Later, smaller, roughly circular tunnels – which gave rise to its nickname the Tube – were dug through the London Clay at a deeper level. Today, the term Tube can refer, depending on the context, to either the whole Underground system, or only to those lines with the distinctive low-profile trains that operate in deep-level tunnels. The system has 270 stations and 250 miles (400 km) of route. Despite its name, only 45% of the system is actually 'underground' in tunnels, with much of the system in the outer areas of London operating on the surface. The coverage of the Underground within the outer areas is geographically skewed to the north, with less than 10% of Tube stations lying to the south of the River Thames. This is principally because the tunnelling stratum North of the River Thames is London Clay, which is almost ideal for tunnelling, while South of the river the ground comprises sands and gravels, which, in earlier times, was difficult to tunnel. This was balanced by the very extensive over-ground network South of the river, compared with that North of the river. Modern Tunnel Boring Machines can cope with these different strata. The early lines were marketed as the UndergrounD in the early 20th century on maps and signs at central London stations. The private companies that owned and ran the railways were merged in 1933 to form the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB). The current operator, London Underground Limited (LUL), is a wholly owned subsidiary of Transport for London (TfL), the statutory corporation responsible for most elements of the transport network in Greater London. As of 2015, 92% of operational expenditure is covered by passenger fares. The Travelcard ticket was introduced in 1983 and Oyster, a contactless ticketing system, in 2003. Contactless card payments were introduced in September 2014.The LPTB was a prominent patron of art and design, commissioning many new station buildings, posters and public artworks in a modernist style. The schematic Tube map, designed by Harry Beck in 1931, was voted a national design icon in 2006 and now includes other lines – the Docklands Light Railway, London Overground and TfL Rail – as well as the non-rail Emirates Air Line. London Underground branding is built around the symbols of the roundel and the Johnston typeface, created by Edward Johnston in 1916. London Underground celebrated 150 years of operations in 2013, with various events marking the milestone.".
