- Lie-to-children abstract "Lie-to-children (also referred to in scholarly academic sources as lies-to-children) is a phrase that describes a simplified explanation of technical or complex subjects as a teaching method for children and laypeople. The phrase has been incorporated by academics within the fields of biology, evolution, bioinformatics and the social sciences. Media use has extended to publications including The Conversation and Forbes. The term was first discussed by scientists Jack Cohen and Ian Stewart in their 1994 coauthored non-fiction book about complexity theory and the nature of scientific explanation, The Collapse of Chaos: Discovering Simplicity in a Complex World. They elaborated upon this concept in their coauthored 1997 non-fiction book within the field of sociobiology: Figments of Reality: The Evolution of the Curious Mind. Cohen and Stewart further delved into a discussion of the issue with author Terry Pratchett in the 1999 book The Science of Discworld. The authors wrote in The Science of Discworld, that the phrase referred to: \"a statement that is false, but which nevertheless leads the child's mind towards a more accurate explanation, one that the child will only be able to appreciate if it has been primed with the lie\".The term subsequently gained traction by academics and has been since discussed and analysed within the framework of teaching methodology and appropriate education techniques. British author David Langford said his favorite theme within Discworld was the lie-to-children trope. The concept of lie-to-children was discussed at-length in 2000 by Andrew Sawyer, where the subject itself was included in the article title: \"Narrativium and Lies-to-Children: 'Palatable Instruction in 'The Science of Discworld'\". The 2001 book Nonlinear Dynamics in the Life and Social Sciences recommended it as a way to introduce new students to the concept of evolution. Bioinformatics, Biocomputing and Perl (2004) explained the concept and suggested it was useful for teaching complex topics including RNA, protein and DNA. Geophysicist Kim Kastens of Carleton College delved into an analysis of the appropriateness of such a teaching technique in a 2011 article, and recommended certain instances where it should be avoided in the classroom setting. The Conversation wrote in 2015 usage of the technique could help youths build a basic knowledge base, and compared it to the Wittgenstein's ladder philosophical concept. Forbes science journalist and physics professor Chad Orzel stressed in a 2015 piece that lie-to-children was not sufficient on its own to thoroughly explain scientific concepts to children, and praised a science-based initiative to yield more specific explanations. In a subsequent piece for Forbes, Tim Worstall wrote that lie-to-children was ubiquitous across multiple academic disciplines.".
