- Henry_Reilly abstract "Henry Reilly is a Councillor on the new Newry, Mourne and Down District Council who is currently under suspension from the UK Independence Party since the 17th September for a 3 month period. Reilly grew up on a farm in County Down and worked for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. He joined the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), and was first elected to Newry and Mourne District Council at the Northern Ireland local elections, 1989. He held his seat in the Mournes in 1993, 1997, 2001 and 2005, serving as Mayor of Newry in 2004/05.Initially a supporter of UUP leader David Trimble, by 2004, Reilly was publicly calling for him to resign. In 2007, Reilly left the UUP and then went onto join the UK Independence Party (UKIP), becoming its first councillor in Northern Ireland. He was subsequently elected as Chairman of the Northern Ireland Regional branch of the party and returned as the elected chairman for 5 subsequent years up to 2015. Party membership was growing steadily when David McNarry applied to join UKIP in 2012 after being expelled from the Ulster Unionist Party. Membership now sits at 220 with Reilly being widely acknowledged as being the driving force behind the party since joining UKIP in 2007; McNarry was appointed as the new leader of the party in Northern Ireland, but Reilly kept the title of Chairman having been elected by an overwhelming majority of the party membership in Northern Ireland.Reilly stood in South Down at the Northern Ireland Assembly election, 2007, under the UKIP label taking 2.7% of the vote. He stood again in 2011, increasing his first preference vote share to 5.6%, but he still missed out on election. However, he easily held his council seat at the Northern Ireland local elections, 2011, then, following reorganisation of local government, took a seat on the new Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in 2014.Reilly stood as UKIP's candidate at the European Parliament election, 2014, taking seventh position, with 24,584 first preference votes. He also stood at the UK general election, 2015 in South Down, coming in fifth place, with 7.1% of the vote.Reilly resigned as NI Chairman of the UK Independence Party in August of 2015. Reilly was then suspended as a member of the UK Independence Party in September 2015 for bringing the party into disrepute. He now awaits an appeal of his suspension and continues to serve as a Councillor on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council representing the Mourne area.".
