He was defeated in 1857, re-elected in 1859, and 1865, but defeated again when Maldon's representation was reduced to one seat in 1868. He was re-elected in 1874, and held the seat until he resigned from the House of Commons on 5 December 1878 by becoming Steward of the Manor of Northstead.".
