Before that he was the FT's Washington bureau chief and South Asia Bureau Chief based in New Delhi.He is the author of the 2006 book In Spite of the Gods: The Strange Rise of Modern India, and the 2012 book Time To Start Thinking: America and the Spectre of Decline, published with a different subtitle in North America: Time to Start Thinking: America in the Age of Descent.His first job was as a correspondent for The Guardian in Geneva.
