Born in Maryborough, Victoria, he was educated at Xavier College where he was both captain and dux, and in 1889 and 1890 won exhibitions in English and history. An Ormond College scholarship followed, and in his second year at Melbourne University he won the scholarship in British history and jurisprudence. The following year he gained final honours, and won the Wyselaskie prize for constitutional law. Before entering politics, he was a lawyer in Maryborough.In 1914, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Labor member for Grampians, narrowly defeating sitting Liberal Hans Irvine. He died of a brain haemorrhage a few months later, on New Year's Day 1915.".
