- California_Clipper abstract "California Clipper was a Boeing 314, tail number NC18602, which was in service from 1939-1950. California Clipper was initially operated by Pan Am on routes from the US west coast to destinations in and across the Pacific Ocean, but was handed over to the US Military for use during World War Two as part of a pre-war agreement between the military and Pan Am. After the war the aircraft was sold to World Airways, and was scrapped in 1950.California Clipper is notable for having been the first commercial aircraft to circumnavigate the globe. In early December 1941 the aircraft left California on a route to Auckland, New Zealand, including a stop in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Shortly after leaving Hawaii the crew received notice via radio of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Following pre-existing instructions about what to do in the event of an outbreak of war between the US and Japan, the crew continued on to Auckland. Based on updated instructions received in Auckland, the crew pioneered a new route heading west from Auckland and eventually returning to the US at La Guardia Airport in New York City, overcoming a variety of obstacles including a lack of relevant navigational charts, inability to access proper fuel, mechanical problems, and close calls with military aircraft.".
