He attended Eastlake High School in Sammamish, Washington and then the University of Notre Dame, with whom he won the Big East Conference Player of the Year in 1998. The previous year, he was the conference's Rookie of the Year.In 1998, he played for the United States national baseball team in the 1998 Baseball World Cup. He played in the minor leagues from 1999 to 2007, after being taken by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round of the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft. He reached as high as Triple-A in three seasons, but never played in the major leagues.
