- Bob_Dermer abstract "Bob Dermer is a children's entertainment actor who was born in Ottawa, Ontario,Canada in 1946. He began his theatrical training there in 1954, at the 100 plus year old Ottawa Little Theatre. He made his first serious professional appearance in Canadian television in 1965, with \"Milk and Honey\" on a CTV affiliate. It was a 5 night a week, satirical, highly topical 'soap opera/sit-com', 15 minutes long, and it followed \"Sermonette\" on at 11:30 p.m., it was the last programme before the National Anthem was played and the station went off the air for the night. It ran for 200 episodes. In 1967 he was offered a job, puppeteering with Noreen Young, and that began a professional association that would last more than 35 years. A long run of series television based out of Ottawa began almost immediately after their meeting, starting with \"Hi Diddle Day\" (8 years ?), and followed by \"Pencil Box\" (2 years). By the early '70's, Bob was commuting back and forth between Ottawa and Toronto, TV work in Ottawa on the weekends, and working the stages of Toronto's burgeoning theatrical scene during the week. As well as Toronto, work elsewhere in Canada took him to stages in Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal and Victoria, among others. International opportunities saw Bob working in theatres as far afield as the Royal Court Theatre in London, England's West End, with \"Pilk's Madhouse\". His performann this play left no less than the world-renowned playwrite, Sam Beckett himself, absolutely speechless. Bob enjoyed continuing success as a stage performer, some reviews flattering in the extreme ... \" a tiny superstar\" - Urjo Kareda in the Toronto Star reviewing \"Maybe We Could Get Some Bach\". With the US beckoning, Bob was pleased to make his Broadway debut in \"42 Seconds from Broadway with Henry Winkler. Despite Bob's success on the stage, he still found time to maintain his career as a puppeteer and voice specialist. Doing a stint with the Hanna-Barbera organizations in Vancouver and Los Angeles. Still and all, Bob always considered Canada, and latterly Toronto as his only home. In the '70's, now working with TVOntario, (originally OECA), and once again with Noreen Young, Bob enjoyed three remarkable seasons of the primary school reading series Readalong (1976-1979), as well as other series\" Two Plus You\" and \"Bookmice\". Also during this time Bob took on a lead role on \"Quentin Durgens, M.P.\", starring Gordon Pinsent, and several appearances on \" The King of Kensington\". In the 1980s, he appeared on the children's show Today's Special, still his favourite project, playing a puppet security guard character named Sam Crenshaw for six years, as well as staring for six years in the Animatrix Raccoons series and specials as Ralph Raccoon (and various other characters). He was also the voice of Grumpy Bear in the television series Care Bears for six years as well as appearing in 3 Carebears feature films. Later on, he would make a cameo appearance in the 1994 Disney holiday hit, The Santa Clause. Bob's preference was always for continuing roles, where he would have the time to develop his character and bring his best to it; so he accepred the recurring role of Lorenzo in the final two years of that much beloved children's classic, \"Mr. Dress-Up\" as well as co-starring with Tabby Johnson on \"Guess What ?\" for two seasons. His endearing portrayal of Bowser earning him a Gemini nomination in this, the first year of this award in the 'primary school' division, but, most likely, it will also be Bob's last year of work in a field he has devoted some 50+ years to. After a brief foray back into theatre in 1998 with \"Tuesdays with Morrie\" Bob finally decided that it was time to devote more time to two others of his great loves, travel and birding. Trips to Botswana, Namibia, Ecuador, South Africa, Cambodia, Colombia, Madagascar, Iran, Morocco, Panama, India, the Philippines, etc, etc, brought him, eventually, to Vietnam, where he was blessed to meet, (his words), a wonderful, wise and beautiful woman, Hue; now his wife, and they live happily in the Mekong Delta with their son, Joseph.".
