- Alexander_Sloan description "A lifelong pacifist himself, as an M.P. he voted against the declaration of the Second World War, he lost four of his youngest brothers, aged 19 up to 33 years in the First World War. 25% of Scottish miners fought in that war. He was very involved in movements like the India League and what became the Movement for Colonial Freedom but made 640 interventions in his 6 years in Parliament covering issues like soldiers' conditions and ill-treatment, workers, particularly miners' conditions India etc. A particular focus of his early life was fighting against the tight control that the mining companies had over the whole of the lives of mining communities, where all purchases had to be from the company store with its huge mark-up, the "truck system".".
- Alexander_Sloan description "British politician. "Sanny" Sloan started work at 12 years of age in an ironstone mine but in an accident soon after, he lost the sight of one eye. He fought all his life against injustice poverty and war. He was a county councillor for 25 years, secretary of the Scottish Miners' Federation and a prominent ILP figure. He was Labour M.P. for South Ayrshire from 1939 to 16 November 1945 when he died. A lifelong pacifist himself, as an M.P. he voted against the declaration of the Second World War, he lost four of his youngest brothers, aged 19 up to 33 years in the First World War. A particular focus of his early life was fighting against the tight control that the mining companies had over the whole of the lives of mining communities, where all purchases had to be from the company store with its huge mark-up, the "truck system". He also went to prison in 1921 during the Hunger Strike which was really a lock-out. He and 4 other men managed to get 16 "Volunteers" at a local colliery to stop maintaining the pit in good order. The idea of the owners was to resume production once their huge stock of coal ran out, but not have to produce for the time being. The authorities tried to give the five men life imprisonment and charged them with mobbing & rioting. This was an important legal stated case which is written up in minutes of the High Court of Justiciary 1921-22. It was decided that5 was not enough to be a mob, so "Sanny" got 3 months and his son and brother and the others got 6 weeks in Barlinnie. This man was revered because he had principles and put them into practice. He wanted an egalitarian society. He not only went to court and often successfully argued compensation cases for injured workers but pushed in the council for housing and education improvements. On a personal level he quietly and discreetly helped people in practical ways when they were having problems. He was also radical, wanting a republic, an end to war and poverty, increased internal self-government . He was a real humanitarian and internationalist but he was a stormy firebrand socialist of the old school, for instance he was a lifelong teetotaller but he started having the odd glass of wine with a meal with hid grand-daughters. He was an impassioned speaker, a Burns Night favourite, good fun, a real Scot".
