Marked by experimentalist sensibilities and a desire to break with tradition, post-punk artists embraced non-rock genres previously reviled by punk, such electronic music and various black dance styles, as well as novel recording technology and production techniques. The movement also saw the frequent intersection of high and popular culture, with artists incorporating the influence of visual art, radical politics, modernist literature and the avant-garde. Accompanying these musical developments were subcultures that produced art, independent record labels, multimedia performances and fanzines in conjunction with the music. The early post-punk vanguard included groups such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Wire, Public Image Ltd, Joy Division, Talking Heads, Throbbing Gristle, Scritti Politti and The Contortions. The development of the post-punk scene was also closely related to that of genres such as gothic rock, no wave and industrial music. Developing throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. much of the movement had dissipated by 1985, eventually providing the impetus for the New Pop movement as well much subsequent alternative and independent music."@en }
