The town is roughly twenty-three miles (37 km) southeast from downtown Portland.Named after William H. Boring, a farmer who settled the area in the 1870s, Boring was officially founded as a railroad town in 1903 after the Portland Railway, Light and Power Company constructed a line to the town. The former railway is now part of the Springwater Corridor, a rail trail which begins in Boring and ends at the Eastbank Esplanade in downtown Portland.
