It was discovered on 26 August 1941, by Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at Turku Observatory in the southwestern parts of Finland.The asteroid is a member of the Themis family, a dynamical family of outer-belt asteroids with nearly coplanar ecliptical orbits. It has a D-type spectrum, which is more commonly found among Hildian asteroids and Jupiter trojans. Bodies with a D-type spectra are thought to have originated in the Kuiper belt.It orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.7–3.5 AU once every 5 years and 5 months (1,987 days). Its orbit shows an eccentricity of 0.12 and is tilted by 3 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic. It has a rotation period of 7.5 hours and an albedo of 0.07, as observed by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and its subsequent NEOWISE mission.The minor planet was named in honour of Swedish astronomer Karl Schalén (1902–1993), who was a director of the Swedish Lund Observatory."@en }
