It was discovered by Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at Turku Observatory on 22 February 1938.The asteroid is a member of the Flora family, a large group of rocky S-type asteroids in the inner main-belt. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 1.9–2.5 AU once every 3 years and 3 months (1,194 days). Its orbit shows an eccentricity of 0.12 and is tilted by 5 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic. It has a very long rotation period of 138 hours and an assumed albedo of 0.20, while observations from the Akari and NEOWISE surveys gave 0.17 and 0.40, respectively.The asteroid was named after Finnish professor of geography and rector at the University of Turku from 1932 to 1934, J.
