It was discovered by Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte at the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Uccle on 26 September 1933. Two nights later, the body was independently discovered by Soviet–Russian astronomer Grigory Neujmin at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula.The S-type asteroid, classified as a Sq-subtype in the SMASS taxonomy, orbits the Sun at a distance of 1.6–2.8 AU once every 3 years and 4 months (1,214 days). Its orbit shows an eccentricity of 0.28 and is tilted by 5 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic. It has a well-defined, concurring rotation period of 2.88 hours, measured by several independent photometric light-curve observations. Based on the surveys carried out by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, IRAS, and the Japanese Akari satellite, it is an extraordinarily bright body with an geometric albedo of 0.46 and 0.53, respectively. This would make it the Mars-crossing asteroid with the highest known albedo. However, the Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link (CALL) derives a much lower albedo of 0.13 from the available data.It is unknown as to whether the name \"Sonja\" refers to any known place, person or occurrence."@en }
