- Sauquoit,_New_York abstract "Sauquoit is a hamlet in the Town of Paris, Oneida County, New York, USA. It is located on New York Route 8, approximately 6 miles south of Utica and east of Paris village. It straddles Sauquoit Creek, a small Mohawk River tributary, and nestles in the Sauquoit Valley.Sauquoit is the birthplace of Asa Gray, world famous botanist; Michael O'Donoghue, humor writer and performer most notable for his work on Saturday Night Live; Arthur Cushman McGiffert, theologian; and Richard Mathy, reality contestant on season 4 of The Bachelorette. It is also said that George Washington granted land to one of his soldiers during the Revolutionary War where Orchard Hall is now standing.The local high school is Sauquoit Valley Central School. Sauquoit Valley Central School is home to several cross-country state championships, including a stretch of 3 boys state titles in 4 years from 2001 to 2004 (2001 marked the first team state title in school history) and an undefeated dual meet streak from 1993 to 2005. In 2002 Sauquoit's boys team placed 2nd in the State Federation Championships, led by Ben Dever, John Nicotera, Derek Crossman,Alan Merrick, Kevin Horvath, Steve Stedman, Larry DiCesare, and Jason Lomonaco. The girls soccer team has also had recent success, with runs to the Class C state championship final four in 2009, 2010, and 2012. In 2010, the boys volleyball team won the sectional and regional titles, both firsts for the program. They were the runners-up to the title the following year. The girls tennis team were Center State Conference (CSC) champions three years running and had an undefeated season. Topping off the 2010- 2011 school year, boys varsity tennis won the sectional title, first time in 27 years, and sent Jake Stocker, Matthew Wilbur, and Arthur Brutsky to the state tournament. The boys tennis team owns the seventh longest winning streak in the history of the New York State High School Athletic Association with 62 wins (2006-2011). Lastly, the girls track team has won five consecutive sectional titles and six consecutive CSC titles. Sauquoit also has many talented musicians and artists. Thanks to the school's concert and jazz bands as well as the concert choirs the school has a blossoming musical program. The district was enlarged when the Chadwicks School District was annexed.".
