- Poetry_Toronto abstract "Poetry Toronto was a Canadian literary magazine for most of the 1980s. It was established by Maria Jacobs.About the FoundersMaria Jacobs is a Canadian publisher, writer, and, poet who along with fellow Canadian writer Heather Cadbsy was the head of Poetry Toronto magazinein the 1980s. The poetry magazine had distributed publications for about a decade. Born in the Netherlands in 1930, Maria’s family was witness to the hardships ofwar, during which they housed and hid Jewish people in order to protect them from danger. Maria and husband Paul Moens ultimately relocated to Toronto,Ontario, Canada where she continues to reside in the Beaches. Though she never took her matrimonial last name, choosing instead to defy patriarchal beliefsand develop a last name of her own. Maria and Paul eventually had and raised five children together while developing their life in Canada. Meanwhile, Jacobsreceived an M.A in Mathematics and a B.A in English from York University in Toronto, Ontario. She also ran a coffee house (The Axle-tree Coffee House)which was a meeting place for the artistically inclined including both poets, and musicians. She has written several books and poetry anthologies, and edited forvarious other works. She and Heather Cadsby developed a publishing company in order for women in literature to have an outlet for publications called Warsak and Wynne. She presently continues this endeavor and now runs the company solely. Some of Maria’s publications include: What Feathers Are for, Safe House,A: Holland 1940-1945, The Third Taboo: A Collection of Poems on Jealousy, Dutch Gifts: Stories and Poems and Creative Non-fiction on a Netherlandic Theme, andmany more. Canadian born author, poet, and one time publisher, Heather Cadsy was born and grew up in Belleville, Ontario, though she later moved to nearby Toronto,Ontario. Though she once taught as an elementary school teacher, she began to focus on writing and publishing. Together with writer Maria Jacobs, the twopoets established Poetry Toronto Magazine in the 1980s, which is no longer in publication. They also developed and ran Warsak and Wynne together, although Cadbsy is no longer involved directly in this endeavor. Warsak and Wynne was called such, due to the two founders,Cadbsy and Jacobs putting together maiden names from females in their family tree. Heather is a graduateof McMaster University and has written and had published many anthologies of poetry and books. She remains an active member of the Toronto literary community and has appeared as guest lecturerat York University where she read to students and answered questions. She dedicates much of her timeinspiring upcoming poets at the Art Bar in Downtown Toronto, on Wednesdays and was a part of the inception of the Art Bar Project. Her and Maria Jacobs, along with devopling Poetry Toronto, and Warsak and Wynn had also writtena book together entitled The Third Taboo in 1983. Her publications include but are not limited to Love & Hunger:An Anthology of New Fiction, The Best Canadian Poetry in English, and Love & Hunger: An Anthology of New Fiction, and A Tantrum of Synonyms.".
