- Pod_Volunteer abstract "Pod Volunteer (Personal Overseas Development) is an ethical non-profit organisation, based in the United Kingdom. Since 2001 Pod Volunteer has been sending volunteers aged 18 and 50+ to third world countries to help disadvantaged local people and poor communities build a better future for themselves and their children. The organisation's mission has been approved by the Tourism Concern: to provide genuine benefits to the recipient countries as well as to the volunteers. Work happens on joint projects with a variety of volunteering organisations, including educational, animal and orphanage bodies to help with the work rather than create it in a first place. International partners include Kais Kids in support of disadvantaged children in Cambodia, SOS Bahini in support of people in need in Nepal, Village Africa operating in Tanzania, East Africa, based in a village called Yamba (high in the West Usambara Mountains in the Tanga region), Prapreak School in Thailand and others.Volunteering projects vary from 2 weeks to 16 weeks, and the type of roles vary in relation to the volunteers` skills. Placements working with local communities involve teaching sports projects, English and creative arts teaching; community development, animal care film and photography projects, building or child care. The organisation has been involved in a number of local projects involving conservation and research work, along with wildlife roles such as monkey rescue, cheetah reintroduction and horse rehabilitation. In 2014, Pod Volunteer supported 43 projects worldwide, recruited 655 volunteers from 36 nationalities and sent over £300,000 overseas. In that year Pod's volunteers accumulated 10,444 working days helping 1,321 animals, supported 2,515 children and conserved 127,088 acres of land. In 2015 Pod raised over £10K for the April 2015 Nepal earthquake, responsible for more than 9,000 deaths and more than 23,000 injuries, through online donations. Some of the funds have been used for immediate disaster relief and the rest will be used for reconstruction and ongoing support of those affected at the schools, street children’s centre and other projects where they work.".
