Pius Butz was born on the 23rd of April, 1916 in Plittersdorf, in the District of Rastatt in Baden bei Wien and joined the Wehrmacht on the 14th November, 1938. According to a report from September 1939, he was a member of the 14th company of the 111th infantry regiment. It is assumed that he participated with this regiment in the battle for France. According to a message from February 1941, he was also a soldier in the 228th infantry regiment of the 16th Corps, with whom he took part in the Balkans campaign. At the beginning of the Eastern campaign the Regiment in the 101st light infantry division in the southern part was used.
