He was educated at Boston Grammar School and King's College, Cambridge where he graduated BA in Classics in 1884. He became a University Extension lecturer. From 1897 he was Professor of History at the Yorkshire College, which became the University of Leeds in 1904. Upon his retirement from the professorship in 1927 a drypoint portrait was executed by the artist Malcolm Osborne In 1901 he married Edith Radford (1863-1929). From 1930 to 1932 he was Professor of Modern History at the University of Egypt, Cairo. He is buried at St Chad's Church, Far Headingley, Leeds.".
