- Antiochian_Greek_Christians abstract "Antiochian Greek Christians, also known as Rûm, are Arabic-speaking Christians from the Levant region. They are either members of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch or the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, who have resided within the territories of Syria, Lebanon, and the territory of contemporary Turkish province of Hatay which includes Antakya (ancient Antioch), and their descendants in the Middle East and global diaspora. The designation "Greek" refers to the use of Greek language in liturgy, and the majority of Antiochian Greek Christians identify as native populations. According to Greek historian Pavlos Karolidis writing in 1908, they are Macedonian Greeks settlers, Roman-era Greeks, Byzantine Greeks (Rûm). Karolidis was attempting to refute the Russian claims that they were of Aramaic origin. However, even during the First Crusade era, most of them were referred to as Syrians ethnically and Greeks in regard to religious affinity, and only the inhabitants of Antioch city were referred to as Greek ethnically. The Antiochians also include Ghassanid Arabs, and are not considered ethnic Greeks by modern scholarly. Genetic evidence revealed no noticeable or significant genetic differentiation between the Greek Orthodox Christians, Greek Catholic Christians and the Maronites, Sunni Muslims, Shiite Muslims, and Druze of the region. With Arabic becoming the lingua franca in the Levant today, the majority has become an Arabic-speaking Christian community, primarily speaking Arabic in its Levantine Arabic variant, and those within present day Turkish territory speak Turkish.".
