The Lants are the parents of nine children and together they founded a large preschool and developed a phonics-based beginning reading program.On April 2, 2005, Lant was called by LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley to succeed Coleen K. Menlove as general president of the church's organization for children. Lant chose Margaret S. Lifferth and Vicki F. Matsumori as her counselors.
