- Q11249346 abstract "Jasper Donald Rine (born 1953) is an American scientist, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a Professor of Genetics, Genomics and Development at the University of California, Berkeley.Rine received his B.S. from the State University of New York at Albany in 1975 and his Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the University of Oregon in 1979. He then joined the Berkeley faculty in 1982. He is also a former director of the Human Genome Center at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, an honorific leadership group of the American Society for Microbiology. Dr. Rine was one of two researchers to discover SIR proteins, conserved chromatin organizing proteins that modulate gene expression across taxa. As a professor, Dr. Rine was also one of the organizers of the Dog Genome Project. He was named a HHMI professor for 2006 - 2010. His work focuses on epigenetics and understanding the impact of human genetic variation.He has founded several startups, including Acacia Biosciences (now part of Merck & Co.).In April 2005, Rine got some hostile attention on the blogosphere when his laptop had been stolen and he exaggerated the security measures and legalities involved in an attempt to have the thief return his computer.".
