The SM465 can be found in Chevrolet and GMC full-size trucks, Blazers, Suburbans among other models. Some applications beyond 1-ton pickup trucks came with larger input shafts. The transmission is great for off-roaders as it has a very low first gear that is great for rock-crawling. It is popular for shorter wheelbase Jeeps, such as the CJ5, because it is short, and more readily available than the previous SM420. The SM465 has known to be very tough, it is made from cast-iron which also makes it heavy. For 1992 this was replaced in 2500 & 3500-series pickup truck applications by the New Venture 4500. The \"SM\" in the transmission's designation stands for either Saginaw-Muncie, or Synchro-Mesh. GM literature often referred to this as a CH465, referencing Chevrolet.Gear Ratios are: First Gear - 6.55:1 Second Gear - 3.58:1 Third Gear - 1.70:1 -Sometimes incorrectly listed as 1.57:1. Fourth Gear - 1.00:1 Reverse - 6.09:1The SM465 features dual provisions for Power Take-Offs, one on either side, which can run a winch for off-road use, or various farm implements or even salt / sand throwers for snow plow use, or hydraulic pumps, such as older tow trucks. PTO winches can offer more pull ability than electric winches. '88-'91 versions had an aluminum top with improved shift feel. 1986 pickup truck versions had hydraulic clutch release replacing the previous mechanical linkage. The SM465 really needs 50-weight lubricant, which is not very common. One common issue is abuse leads to having to manually hold the shifter in third gear. There have been 3 different output shafts for pickup trucks. Early 4 wheel drive was a short 10 spline, late 4WD was long 32 spline, and all 2 wheel drive were 35 spline. Early 4WD came mated to a New Process 205 transfer case. 1981 and later versions came with a New Process 208 if not a 205. New Process 241 was used behind the 465 starting in 1989 when it replaced the New Process 208 in the V-series trucks. The 465 was the only manual transmission available for V-series trucks (1987-1991). Adapters are available from the aftermarket."@en }
