The award was first given following the 1982–83 season. Only one player—Caleb Green of Oral Roberts—has won the award three times (2005–07). Four other players have won the award twice: Jon Collins of Eastern Illinois, Tony Bennett of Wisconsin–Green Bay, Bryce Drew of Valparaiso, and Keith Benson of Oakland.As of 2016, Oral Roberts and Valparaiso have the most winners. Valparaiso left the Summit League in 2007 to join the Horizon League, where it has remained to this day. Oral Roberts rejoined the Summit in 2014 after spending two seasons in the Southland Conference. Oakland has had three winners, but left after the 2012–13 season to join the Horizon League.
