Magruder primarily served as a guerrilla in his native state of Kentucky and was present at a number of significant Western theater Civil War battles. Magruder originally enlisted in the Confederate States Army and served under General Simon Bolivar Buckner. Magruder was present at the Battle of Fort Donelson where he was captured with 13,000 of his fellow Confederate soldiers. Magruder soon escaped his captors and joined with the personal bodyguard of Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston. In this capacity, he participated in the Battle of Shiloh. After General Johnston's demise, he joined the forces of General John Hunt Morgan. Here, he participated in Morgan's raids into Ohio and Indiana. After the war, Magruder was executed by the US 18th Infantry Regiment in Louisville for his actions as a Confederate guerrilla."@en }
