Strief played for several teams during his career from 1879 to 1885. He was primarily a second baseman, but played at every position except pitcher and catcher. He finished his career with a .207 batting average.On May 3, 1882, Strief hit the first-ever home run in Pittsburgh Pirates history. Strief's home run came five years before the Pirates (then called the Pittsburgh Alleghenys) entered the National League. Until 1887, the club was a member of the American Association, and Strief's home run was against the Cincinnati Red Stockings in a 7-3 Pittsburgh loss.
