Qatar Charitable Trust, Iqra Charitable Society (Jeddah), Sheikh Ahmed Salah Jamjoom, Dr. Aleem Mohammed (Trinidad, West Indies) and some other foreign agencies have made significant contributions to the University. The university was founded by late Professor Syed Ali Ashraf. DIU was established in 1989. The government of Bangladesh accredited it as a private university in 1993.
