The same way as similar terms like \"mazepintsi\" (from Ivan Mazepa), \"vyhovtsi\" (from Ivan Vyhovsky), \"petliurivtsi\" (from Symon Petliura), \"makhnovtsi\" (from Nestor Makhno) etc., according to the names of historical figures of Ukrainian history.Most often,this term was used by Soviet propaganda in negative meaning, as a synonym for banditry and threat to Soviet administration. Generally, term meant all Ukrainian nationalists underground movement (despite the movement’s broader division into fractions, term served as a primitive unification tool during the World War II and after it). Another part of meaning was about Ukrainian nationalists living abroad and in Ukraine, who were in opposition to the Soviet national policy.During the national liberation struggle of 1940s-1950s, most of its members (followers of OUNR traditions) called themselves \"banderivtsi\".
