It was discovered by Japanese astronomers Makio Akiyama and Toshimasa Furuta at Susono Observatory, Japan, on 18 October 1990.The dark C-type asteroid, classified as a Ch-subtype in the SMASS taxonomic scheme, orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.0–2.7 AU once every 3 years and 7 months (1,312 days). Its orbit is tilted by 11 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic and shows an eccentricity of 0.17.According to the surveys carried out by the Japanese Akari satellite and the U.S. Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer with its subsequent NEOWISE mission, the body has an albedo between 0.04 and 0.05, while the Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link assumes a slightly higher value of 0.06. Several photometric light-curve observations rendered a rotation period of 3.7 and 3.8 hours, respectively.The minor planet was named for the Japanese town of Kanaya (金谷町 Kanaya-chō) in Haibara District of the Shizuoka Prefecture. It is the native town of the first discoverer, Makio Akiyama. It is also an old station on the ancient national road "Tokai-do", some 200 km west of Tokyo. The Malinohara tablelands to the south of this town on the west bank of the Oi river are famous as one of the largest tea fields in Japan."@en }
