It was discovered by Swiss astronomer Paul Wild at Zimmerwald Observatory near Bern, Switzerland, on 23 September 1965.The dark C-type asteroid is a member of the Polanian subgroup of the Nysa family of asteroids and shows a rare F-type spectrum in the Tholen classification scheme. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.0–2.9 AU once every 3 years and 10 months (1,401 days). Its orbit is tilted by 3 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic and shows an eccentricity of 0.18.In 2011, a photometric light-curve analysis by French astronomer René Roy at the Blauvac Observatory (627) in southeastern France rendered a well-defined a rotation period of 7000518390000000000♠5.1839±0.0001 hours with a brightness amplitude of 0.53 in magnitude. Based on the surveys carried out by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, IRAS, and NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and its subsequent NEOWISE mission, the asteroid's surface has very low albedo in the range between 0.03 and 0.04.Appenzella, was named in 1971 by the discoverer in honor of the rural Swiss Canton of Appenzell, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the public middle school Kantonsschule Trogen in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, founded in 1821."@en }
