A highly decorated pilot by the end of the war, Meyer was born in Haiti and joined the NSDAP in 1933. He served in Lehrgeschwader 2 and participated in the Battle of Kursk and awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 21 August 1941 for his actions. By the Battle of Kursk Meyer commanded the IV (tank-buster) Gruppe of Schlachtgeschwader 9 based near Mikoyanovka, equipped with the Henschel Hs-129 armoured ground-support aircraft. Served as Kommandeur of IV./SG 9 in October 1944 flying the Henschel Hs 129B. His last command was I./SG 104, flying the Fw 190F & G and the Ju 87 D & G. Meyer flew at least 500 missions, and claimed about 50 tanks destroyed. Following the end of the Second World War he continued flying helicopters.".
