He was superintendent of schools at an Indian reservation in Fort Apache, Arizona. Then in 2001, he was recruited by Oakland's Native American community to take over the struggling American Indian Public Charter School in Oakland.Chavis returned to North Carolina to speak on his experiences and Elmer W. Hunt's photographs in 2011.Chavis currently resides in Oakland. He received much criticism from the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) for allegedly laundering over $3.8 million in school funds for himself and his wife, Marsha Amador. Chavis, in his defense, claimed that all these transactions were honest and legitimate. American Indian Public Charter School had its charter revoked in April 2013 by OUSD for reasons of fiscal mismanagement. Despite the allegations, Chavis has announced his interest to start a charter school in Nevada, named after Ronald Reagan.".
