Johnson to a new seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi created by 80 Stat. 75. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on April 3, 1968, and received his commission on April 4, 1968. He served as chief judge from 1968 to 1982, and assumed senior status on April 26, 1983.
