The bank building was built in 1911-13 for the Ayers family's bank, which had operated at the site since David Ayers opened a bank there 1832. The bank is the oldest in Illinois that has never moved from its original site. David Ayers was the most prominent banker in early Jacksonville, and his family's bank remained the largest in Jacksonville through the 1930s. The 1913 building reflects this dominance, as at eight stories it is the tallest building in downtown Jacksonville. Architect Jarvis Hunt of Chicago designed the building in the Renaissance Revival style; the design features a brick and cut stone exterior with a terra cotta egg-and-dart cornice. The bank still operates out of the building, though it is now called the Farmers State Bank.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1986."@en }
