They were the ruling dynasty of Persia from about 710 to 330 BC.During the time of Achaemenes to Cambyses I they were simply vassals to the Median Empire. The family's most celebrated members were Darius I and Cyrus the Great, under whose leadership, the small kingdom of Persia swiftly expanded and defeated their Median overlords, the Lydians, and Babylonians and eventually expanded as far as Egypt and India. The mythical founder of the Achaemenid dynasty is King Achaemenes, though he may have actually ruled. Before the immense expansions by Cyrus the Great, the kingdom of Persia split in two different kingdoms at the end of the reign of Teispes. One was the kingdom of Anshan ruled by the line of Cyrus I (not to be confused with Cyrus II the Great), while the second was the kingdom of Parsumash ruled by the line of Ariaramnes. Cyrus I's grandson Cyrus the Great would later have the two kingdoms of Anshan and Parsumash rejoined, and a descendant of Ariamnes, Darius I would soon come to the throne in 522 BC."@en }
