It was organized by Carlos Franqui with the assistance of major Cuban and international artists, such as Wifredo Lam, René Portocarrero, Alexander Calder, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and many others, who constituted the top artists of their time. The exposition was meant as a homage to free artistic expression, assuming the name of the Salon de Mai collective founded during the Nazi occupation of France. Some people claim this was meant as a contrast to Soviet-inspired "social realist" school. One of the main activities in the show was a collective mural, where multiple artists and other personalities collaborated. Although other exhibitions have used the name afterwards, the depth and breadth of the 1967 show has never been matched. A series of commemorative stamps was issued by the Cuban government, showing a sample of the displayed works."@en }
