He served for two years as a Member of Parliament (MP), until his death in the Crimean War.Pakenham was the son of General Sir Hercules Robert Pakenham (1781–1850) and his wife, Emily, daughter of Thomas Stapleton, 16th Baron le Despencer. His paternal grandfather was the 2nd Baron Longford.
